In 2011, the visionary duo Bob and Melinda Blanchard, had plans to build their dream beach restaurant on the Caribbean island of Anguilla. I was asked to join the team to manage the creative development of this paradise in paradise collaborating closely with the Blanchards every step of the way.

Today, Blanchards Beach Shack is an iconic landmark in Anguilla known to travelers from around the world.

This new visual identity would need to be casually timeless with an authentic and sunny disposition.

The brand would also be about legacy. Blanchards sister restaurant, located next door, had been a ‘mecca for foodies in the Caribbean’ for twenty years. The Beach Shack would need to uphold this integrity.

There is no mistaking a sense of place when arriving at Blanchards Beach Shack. Every detail is part of the carefully implemented brand.

The creation of the vibrant Caribbean palette reflects the island location and colorful culture which is layered with handmade graphic illustrations.

Branding details were implemented on the logo design, environmental graphics, merchandise, uniforms, menu design, service items, and digital marketing — creating cohesion and a unique brand story.

The new site would need to achieve several goals including a re-structuring of the identity to encompass multiple business sectors, visual storytelling to inspire global travelers to visit, while at the same time honoring the history of this iconic Caribbean landmark.

On a tiny island in the middle of the Caribbean, there are no 24-hour copy shops to order last-minute signs. So, off I went with a roll of kraft paper, my sketch, a 12” ruler, and a Sharpie marker to create an 18-foot sign in my hotel room by hand. Sometimes unplanned challenges are the most rewarding!
